ALEXA has been designed to function as both a motion picture camera and a broadcast camera. For television productions, the time and cost savings as well as the extraordinary simplicity of ALEXA workflows will transform budgets and schedules, while the cinematic image quality will stagger viewers. For feature films, the sheer variety of outputs, functions, lenses and accessories will enable cinematographers to realize their visions without ever feeling restricted by technology.

Flexibility is freedom and this, ultimately, is ARRI's message with ALEXA: the groundbreaking technology embodied in this camera represents your creative freedom.

Multiple Outputs

ALEXA can simultaneously record and output a number of formats, all with audio and metadata.

The REC OUT consists of two BNC plugs capable of carrying 1920x1080 1.5G HD-SDI signals with frame rates from 23.976 to 60 fps according to SMPTE standards 274M, 292M and 372M.

The MON OUT is a single BNC connector capable of carrying a 1920x1080 422 YUV 1.5G HD-SDI signal with frame rates of 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 fps according to SMPTE standards 274M and 292M. Its configuration can be changed in the camera menu.

Straight Online Workflow

When your show must go to air as quickly as possible, you can utilize a straight on-line workflow. Record some footage, pop the card into a Laptop and start editing.

Offline/Online Workflow

Or you may use a traditional off-line/on-line workflow. In that case, your camera master would be in ARRIRAW or uncompressed HD with a Log C or Rec 709 gamma. Your dailies and editing proxies are generated right in the camera as ProRes files. These files are immediately ready for viewing or editing. They contain the same video, audio, metadata and timecode as the camera master. In all cases, ALEXA’s Direct to Edit features will lead to simple, fast and efficient workflows.

Look Management

The Recording Output can be configured to display either a linear signal in Rec 709 for gamma-correct viewing on a monitor, or a logarithmic signal (Log C) for a wide range of posibilities in color correction and Digital Intermediate workflow. Even with the recording signal in Log C, Monitor Output and Electronic Viewfinder can show a linear signal for a pleasing preview right out of the camera.
