SULLY captured with ALEXA IMAX

The IMAX version of the ALEXA 65 captures SULLY, Clint Eastwood's biopic about the "Miracle on the Hudson" forced landing

Since ARRI Rental and IMAX Corporation formed a technology partnership in 2015, a variety of high profile, visually ambitious productions have utilized the ALEXA IMAX® camera. This camera, a customized version of ARRI Rental’s ALEXA 65 system, is helping to differentiate The IMAX Experience® in today’s digital era.

The first feature film to employ ALEXA IMAX cameras as principal cameras on main unit, along with ARRI Rental’s Prime 65 lenses, was Clint Eastwood’s film SULLY. A recreation of the real-life 2009 "Miracle on the Hudson" emergency landing, SULLY sees Tom Hanks star as Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the pilot hailed as a hero after saving the lives of 155 passengers and crew when his plane's engines failed over the Hudson River.

Shot by cinematographer Tom Stern ASC, AFC SULLY stormed the US box office, taking the lead in the North American box chart over its opening weekend. According to studio estimates the film made $35.5m (£27m), outperforming expectations of its first week's takings and achieving the fifth-best September opening ever.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter Stern conveyed how, with an IMAX release in mind, he chose to use the IMAX model of the ALEXA 65. Putting the camera through its paces, he took advantage of New York locations that included The George Washington Bridge, Pier 81 near the Intrepid and La Guardia Airport.

Stern gave the camera system high marks, telling The Hollywood Reporter it was a "very positive" production experience.

Speaking to IndieWire, Stern also commented, "When we did the tests last summer, I was on rooftops in LA and we were using the skyscrapers as resolution screens, to make sure this made sense and what the sweet spots were….one of the bizarre, surprising things came in the close-ups. There’s an honest, subjective three-dimensionality. Basically, I was spoking a sharp stick at 3D."
